September, 1913, Normal School Opened Tuesday
In the Durant, Oklahoma newspaper Durant Weekly News, dated Friday, September 12, 1913, front page headline read: "Normal School Opened Tuesday." It was reported that enrollment was already ahead of last year, and new teachers requirements.
The session of the Southeastern Normal School for the fall of 1913 and spring of 1914 opened that Tuesday morning, in 1913, at 8:30 o'clock and within two days the enrollment had reached way above the two hundred mark and with all indications that the number of pupils enrolled would soon number three hundred, which would far break the record of former attendance.
Dr. Murdaugh, president of the institution, advised a reporter that many school teachers from distant counties had enrolled for the year's work in Southeastern, and that many of these were already holders of State certificates to teach.
The added requirements recently adopted by the State Board of Education for teachers in the public schools were much more strict than formerly and school men were authority for the statement that teachers, many of whom had formerly been able to secure certificate, would in future find it more difficult, and in many instances impossible without addition preparation, owing to the added subjects on which examination for certificates would be based. In order to make full preparations for examinations under the added requirement it would require practically an entire year's work in Normal school, and it was advisable for all persons who contemplate securing teacher's certificates for that (1914) next year to enroll in the Normal school and be prepared for the examinations.
In every way, prospects for a successful year's work were bright at the Normal. The faculty that year was larger and included several new teachers, who came with the best of recommendations. There had been ordered for the library some $2,000 worth of books which was suppose to arrive soon and would increase working facilities for students and faculty alike. The laboratories and domestic science departments are now fully equipped in every way and the best of work is anticipated.
