One Hundred Years Ago - 9 September 1913, Tuesday
Looking back through old news archives from Oklahoma, especially The Daily Ardmoreite, dated 9 September 1913, Tuesday, "Drill For Oil Near Sulphur," we find that a bunch of New Yorkers were buying up leases near Sulphur, Oklahoma (midway between Ardmore and Sulphur, to be exact).
Sulphur, Okla., Sept. 8 (1913) -- Mr. Scott and his associates were in Sulphur on September 8, 1913, from New York. They were taking up a bunch of leases in 2S and 3E, near the Black James farm, south of Nebo, with the expectations of drilling several prospective wells for oil and gas.
Mr. scott and his associates seemed to be very enthusiastic over the proposition as there was a large section of territory north of that property that was covered with asphalt that had been segregated by the government and contained several rich deposits of rock and sand asphalt. They said, from a geological standpoint, that the country south must be very rich with oil. This was good news for Ardmore as well as for Sulphur, as the prospecting would be about midway between the two cities.
They New Yorkers had already secured in the neighborhood of eight thousand acres and assure the people of Sulphur that the drilling would begin immediately.
