One Hundred Years Ago - 29 April 1913
One hundred years ago, 28 April 1913, as The Tulsa Daily World reported on the frontage headlines, 29 April 2013, Tuesday, "One Quarter Inch Lost For Oklahoma." It seems a Texas team won a thrilling track meet from the Sooner team that day.
Norman, April 28 (1913) -- "The Texas University took the dual track and field meet front he Oklahoma university Monday by a score of 56 to 53. The meet was the most thrilling ever seen on Boyd field and one southwestern record was broken.
"Merry, a Texas hunchback, buried the discus 126 feet, 6 inches, breaking the former record, held by himself. One quarter of an inch in the broad jump really won the meet for the Long Horns. Vining took first place in the event with a leap of 21 feet. 5-1/2 inches, while Reed's of Oklahoma best endeavor was 21 feet. 5-1/4 inches. From the time the Texans romped away with the first two places in the hundred yards dash the teams were close together, not more than eight points separating them at any time.
