1913 Tulsa Baseball Tidbits
In that same newspaper, Tulsa World, page five, dated 8 April 1913, that we have been reading for this weeks OkieLegacy Ezine, there were the following "Tulsa Baseball Bits" that I though some might be on interest to some early Oklahoma baseball enthusiasts.
Did you know it was around this time that the Sioux City club purchased Bob James, a third baseman, from the Chattanooga club of the Southern league? He would report at Tulsa some time the week of April 8, 1913.
Then there was Kirby White, another of the packers' pitching staff, who would arrive from Ohio later in the week.
How about outfielder Harkey, who had been held up by the floods, being on his way to Tulsa to join the Sioux City bunch.
The Packers was reported to be going to Collinsville the next Thursday for a game with the strong independent club of that place.
Lincoln, Nebraska would play Sioux City in Tulsa the next Saturday and Sunday. The Packers would leave Tulsa for good on April 15, 1913.
The Belleview and South main Street clubs of ls the 1912's city League had reorganized and would play at the South Main street park in the 1913 season. It was reported that both teams were in fine trim.
Finally, the Tulsa Independents had their initial workout Sunday, 1913 on this day. The team, which was being managed by Roy Bernbrock, was composed of clever ex-professionals and leading amateurs, and would be Tulsa's leading club during the 1913 season. It was intended to play some out of town team at Tulsa every Sunday. Very few, if any, weekday games would be matched, but it was hoped to fill all the Sunday dates. Out of town teams wishing dates could address Roy Bernbrock, Tulsa, in care of the First National Bank. The players that had been called on to report for practice April, 1913, at 1 o'clock were: White, Rome, Gourley, Denny, Rice, Young, Foresman, Williams, Carr and Bernbrock. Everyone was given a chance to make the team who cared to show up and work out with this squad.
