Wireless Flashes Nearly 3000 Miles
It was one hundred years ago that Arlington tower in Virginia was reported to send seasons greetings to the Eiffel tower in Paris, to Key West, Colon Point Loma, Cal., and to ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Washington, Dec. 31, 1912 -- Catching a time signal flashed from the Eiffel tower in Paris, nearly 3000 miles distant is the feat accomplished by the big wireless station at Arlington, Virginia, near Washington, according to information given out at the navy department.
It was planned to send New Years' greetings from the Arlington tower to the Eiffel tower in paris, to Key West, Colon, Point Loma, Cal., and to ships in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
1913 New Year Revels To Cease At 1 A.M.
Los Angeles, Dec. 31, 1912 -- Chief of police Sebastian renewed today his declaration that no liberties would be permitted tonight with the closing hour for liquor sales establishments and that in spite of the importunities of intended celebrants, all cafes and saloons must close at 1 a.m.
In spite of the police edict, practically every hotel and cafe reservation for the evening has been sold, and the usual celebration is expected, although revelers have been warned that a special police detail has been ordered to arrest disturbers of the peace.
It was estimated that a quarter of a million dollars will be spent during the night.
