Duchess of Weaselskin

This Monday, 31 December 2012, we are ringing in the New Year 2013 and ringing out the old year with fresh fallen snow here in Southwest Colorado, north end of Vallecito Reservoir. Here is hoping yours and everyones New Year 2013 is a great year ahead!

John Fahey Teaches "Auld Lang Syne" on guitar. Why strum your way through the end of the 2012 and into the New Year 2013 on your guitar or banjo! If you can't do either, then check out Kenny G's version of Auld Lang Syne on the Sax! You gotta love the saxophone, huh!

Auld Lang Syne is considered to be one of Scotland's gifts to the world, recalling the love and kindness of days gone by, taking our neighbors hands in communions as we give a sense of belonging, fellowship into the future.

It is this folksong from the lowland Scots tradition collected and fashioned by the pen of songwriter poet, Robert Burns, that many of us sing and bring in the New Year at present. The words, both Scottish and English are below:

Scots Language version of Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

We twa hae run about the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn,
Frae mornin' sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid willy waught,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

English translated version of Long, Long Ago

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And long, long ago.
And for long, long ago, my dear
For long, long ago,
We'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For long, long ago
And surely youll buy your pint-jug!
And surely I'll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For long, long ago.
We two have run about the hills
And pulled the daisies fine;
But we've wandered manys the weary foot
Since long, long ago.
We two have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
Since long, long ago.
And there's a hand, my trusty friend!
And give us a hand of yours!
And we'll take a deep draught of good-will
For long, long ago.

We leave the Old Year 2012, entering the New Year 2013 with this quote from Charles Darwin, "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change." ~ Charles Darwin quotes (English Naturalist and Author of the theory of evolution by natural selection. 1809-1882)

See you again in the New Year 2013 & Auld Lang Syne!
