100 Years Ago Today - 29 October 1912
One Hundred years ago today, The Evening Herald, Tuesday, October 29, 1912, in Klamath Falls, Oregon, frontage headlines read: "Senator Bourne predicts the Election of Himself and Wilson." An Oregon man, Senator Bourne, declares that Roosevelt had an outside chance but that Taft is hopelessly beaten. He thinks he will run ahead of Teddy in Oregon.
Portland, Oct. 29, 1912 -- Senator Bourne predicted the election of Woodrow Wilson when he was reported saying, "Roosevelt has an outside chance. Taft is hopelessly beaten, Roosevelt will carry Oregon by 6,000 plurality, I will be re-elected by 10,000 votes."
The United Press Service also reported that Colonel Roosevelt was resting in Oyster Bay, dictating letters as he rested.
Out of Washington, D.C., Oct. 29, 1912, reports were that President Taft started for New York at noon to confer with his campaign managers. He would attend the launching of the battleship New York the next day.
