Woodford, OK Flood of 1908
"In the later part of May, 1908, disastrous storms struck Oklahoma, Texas, and other states. Many bridges were washed out. There was much loss of life and property. Because of the high water, there was no travel by train or other means south of Pauls Valley. On May 25, 1908, The Daily Ardmoreite reported that the railroad tracks north of Ardmore in Washita Canyon were under six feet of water. Honey Creek in the Arbuckle Mountains had backed up all the way to the falls. On May 29, the Ardmoreite stated that newspapers in north Texas reported 50 lives lost and 15 million dollars in property damage. That same issue of the Ardmoreite also reported the death of Creek poet and writer, Alex Posey, who had drowned trying to ford the North Canadian River. The flooding was so prolonged and severe, it was four weeks before train service resumed between Ardmore and Davis. All this info is from the Autumn 1960 issue of The Chronicles of Oklahoma." -- Mark Coe
