Insight Into Grandma 1904

This weeks letter from John C. McClure to Constance Warwick takes us back to May 29, 1904 with John still attending Gem City Business College, Quincy, Illinois. It was postmarked May 29, 10P.M., 1904. It had a delivery received date at Alva, Okla., of May 31, 7A.M., 1904. It sounds as though at this time the St. Louis Fair was going on through the Summer of 1904.

Quincy, Ill., May 29, 1904, Miss Constance Warwick, Alva, O. T., Dear Friend Connie.

I received your long looked for letter yesterday, and of course glad to receive it. I would like to have been there to some of those programes (sic). We had a Stereoptican (sic) entertainment instead of the regular literary society. I remember of hearing Thomas reciting: Why he didn't sell the farm.

It has been raining here all forenoon, so I am spending the day writting letters. You certainly told me some news. I knew Nellie was going to get married, but I did not know when. We had a big time when she was back Xmas. Are you acquainted with her.

I am going Boat riding Tuesday Eve. We were going twice last week but it was to cold. There was an excursion to Hanibal Fri. Eve.

Are you sure coming to St. Louis Aug 15. I don't know when I will go yet. You arn't going to St. Louis alone are you. Oh yes! I had my fortune told some time ago. It was done by a Spiritulist (sic). She told my past perfectly. She also gave me a Fright future She went so far as to tell me what my wife's first name was to be. Said that with in one year I would on the Pacific Coast. What kind of a future did you get.

Too bad your mamma won't let you ride on the Merry go round. You had better save those nickels, and come up to Q'cy and see me. So you are going to the country to spend a week. Kindly remember me to Mrs. Snyder and of course (Nellie Also).

We are going to have no school tomorrow. If it is a nice day a crowd of us are going for a walk over the Miss. River Bridge in Mo. Better come and go along, to take care of my hat. Oh! I forgot you would make me lose it. Well I will end this Bummy letter so Bye. Bye. Don't wait so long. Your friend, John c. McClure 435 North 78th St., Quincy.
