"According to George H. Shirk's Oklahoma Place Names, the City of Alva was named for Alva Adams, railroad attorney, who later was governor of the state of Colorado. This would indicate that the person name Alva was in use by the 1850s (Alva Oklahoma was founded in 1893), and possibly earlier.
