May, 1949 - Music Department Wins High Honors At State Contest...
"Alva High School was well represented in the state instrumental contest held at Stillwater on May 6 (1949), when the orchestra received a rating og Excellent Plus, and the band received Very Good. The ratings for the individual entrants were, Bb Clarinet solos - Bill Robinson, excellent, and Harold Butler, excellent; flute solo - Nancy McGinley, superior; trombone solo - Tommy Dean, excellent; cello solo - Joyce McMurphy, good; violin solo - Nancy Joachim, good. There were 90 entrants in the piano contests, in which only eight received a rating of superior. Two of them were from Alva High, Bettie Dean and Nancy McGinley. Mr. Brakebill stated that he was quite pleased with the results. -- DLA"
