Liberty, Mo., Aug. 23, 1907 -- "John Forier Stollings and William J. Sevier, prosperous farmers living near chandler, five miles northeast of here, engaged in a street duel with pistols in this city today, resulting in the death of Stollings.
The duel is culmination of an old feud. The trouble started when Sevier, as a member of the board of education of their district, objected to the employment of Stollings' daughter as a teacher, and kept her from getting the position.
The sons of the two men had a fight in which young Sevier was worsted (sic). The two boys met early today and had another encounter.
The boys notified their respective fathers only few hours before the two men met here today. Stollings attacked Sevier first. Sevier beat off the attack, drew his pistol and fired twice, each bullet striking Stollings."
