World War I, April 6, 1917

On April 6, 1917, two days after the U.S. Senate votes 82 to 6 to declare war against Germany, the U.S. House of Representatives endorses the decision by a vote of 373 to 50, and the United States formally enters the First World War.

History of Rockbridge County, Virginia - World War I

Until the United States entered the war in April, 1917, the Rockbridge newspapers gave little space to the conflict, except as to the telegraphic news on the front page. As in 1861, the people of this county were not precipitant. yet they were quick to rise to the situation when the crisis did arrive.

It was one hundred years ago that The Seattle Star, dated Monday, 24 March 1913, out of Seattle, Washington, reported "Tornado Sweeps Omaha; Reports Indicate 200 Killed." Other towns in the storm zone were wiped out.

1913 - Wealthy Society Woman Exposes Traffic In Girls

It was in that same 24 March 1913, Monday, Seattle, Washington newspaper the the following headline read: "Wealthy Society Woman Exposes Traffic In Girls." It was the startling disappearance 2 years ago (1911) of the beautiful Dorothy Arnold, that shocked James Lee Laidlaw, the millionaire New Yorker banker and his wife, Harriet Burton Laidlaw, that they made a study of the white slave traffic. Mrs. Laidlaw was then after considered the foremost authority on the subject in America.

We find during 1917, that women over the age of 30 won the right to vote. January 1917, unmarried Women and wives of soldiers over age of 30 be allowed to vote.
