NW Okie's Journey

Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas to some and Happy Holidays to others! They say we have some snow coming in this evening through Wednesday with sunshine pushing through on Saturday and Sunday for our parts of Southwest Colorado. And . . . Winter begins tomorrow! How appropriate, huh?!

This week's OkieLegacy Ezine/Tabloid delves into history concerning Virginia's letter that was printed, answered in The New York Times in an editorial by Francis P. Church, September 21, 1897. Then we move on to Clement Clarke Moore's Christmas jingle he wrote for the pleasure of his own household, but it gained wide circulation in the past years (since 1823). When Clement Clarke Moore wrote "A Visit From St. Nicholas," he had no thought that it would ever see the light of publicity. We have also included some Christmas stories concerning the Days of 1864, the Last Christmas of the Southern Confederacy. We have also included more information concerning Washington Irving's book, "Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York," which some say that Moore got the idea for his christmas poem, "A Visit From St. Nicholas."

And last but not least, we found some unpublished letters that Washington Irving wrote to Henry Brevoort, telling of Walter Scott, Dolly Madison, other celebrities, and his travels to Europe, England and Spain. This 1915 volume consists of about one hundred letters, written between 1807 and 1843. Most of them includied those recording the early part of Irving's career and those forming the concluding portion of his correspondence with Brevoort, that had never before appeared in print.

We leave you here with a Christmas poem we found online that says it all [The image on the left is a digital image we took December, 2015 of Vallecito River]:

"Under the tree the gifts enthrall,
But the nicest present of them all
Is filling our thoughts with those who care,
Wanting our Christmas joy to share.
To you, whom we're often thinking of,
We send our holiday joy and love.
~ By Joanna and Karl Fuchs"

Good Night! Good Luck! Happy Holidays To All!
