(1910) Prisoner Fears Freedom

As reported in "The Evening Herald," in Ottawa, Kansas, Thursday, 17 November 1910, page 1, "Prisoner Fears Freedom." A man accused of nutder of former Ottawa girl was in jail. N. L. Miller of Alva, (Oklahoma), although a justice of the Peace, refused to be released on bond.

Alva, Okla., Nov. 17 (1910) -- N. L. Miller, justice of the peace, in jail in Alva, Oklahoma was charged with the murder of Mabel Oakes, refused bail, saying he feared the people of the town would attack him if he appeared on the streets. Miller's bail was fixed at $5,000.

Mabel Oakes was the girl who lived in Ottawa when a child and whose history was given in the Herald the night before, Nov. 16, 1910. The fact that Miller, the accused man, was a justice of the peace had not seemed to make his position any more safe in his home town. The fact that he was afraid of mob violence, would lead to the opinion that there was considerable evidence against him in the possession of the authorities there.
