Chronology of Oklahoma

The chronology of Oklahoma comes from E. D. Nix's book, page 279 -280, "Oklahombres," that he wrote in 1929. Did you know that on 1 March 1845, the Western panhandle was acquired by the Untied States with Annexation of Texas into the Union, and on 9 September 1850, Texas ceded her claim to the Panhandle?

1762 - November 3, the region claimed as part of Louisiana, and conveyed by France to Spain.

  • 1800 - October 1, Louisiana retroceded to France.
  • 1803 - April 30, it was ceded to United States by Louisiana Purchase Treaty.
  • 1804 -March 26, Included in District of Louisiana, which became Louisiana Territory (March 3, 1805), and Missouri Territory (June 4, 1812).
  • 1819 - February 22, Treaty with Spain settles boundary between Mexico (Texas) and Louisiana Purchase. March 1819, included in Arkansas Territory.
  • 1820 - March 3, Slavery permitted by Missouri Compromise.
  • 1820-1840 - Indian Territory (unorganized) set apart by various Indian Treaties as home of Five Civilized Tribes (Cherokees, Creeks, Seminoles, Chickasaws and Choctaws), with local self-government. Other Indians (friendly tribes) also located in western part of Territory.
  • 1824 - May 26, Arkansas Territory reduced in size. Again reduced May 6, 1828. Territorial government over region ended.
  • 1845 - March 1, Western Panhandle acquired by United States with annexation of Texas into the Union.
  • 1850 - September 9, Texas ceded her claim to the Panhandle.
  • 1862 - June 9, Territorial slavery abolished.
  • 1889 - April 22, Oklahoma Territory, first opening of land to homestead settlement by white people.
  • 1890 - May 2, Oklahoma Territory organized under Territorial government, provided that all future Indian reservations opened for settlement should become a part of Oklahoma Territory, and subject to its laws, Territorial and National.Under the Organic Act of May 2.
  • 1890, the panhandle or "No Man's Land" became subject to Oklahoma Territorial jurisdiction.
  • 1891 - September 22, Iowa, Sac and Fox, Pottawatomie and Shawnee Indian Reservations opened to Homestead Settlement.
  • 1892 - April 19, Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indian Reservations opened to Homestead Settlement.
  • 1893 - September 16, Cherokee Outlet opened to homestead settlement.
  • 1895 - May, Kickapoo Indian reservation opened to white settlement.
  • 1896 - March 16, Greer County, having been won from Texas in a case decided by the United States Supreme Court, was added to Oklahoma Territory.
  • 1901 - July, Kiowa, Comanche and Apache Indian Reservations were opened to white settlement.
  • 1905 - Completion of the work of Dawes Commission; tribal government of the Five Civilized Tribes dissolved. Lands allotted in severalty to Indians and they became American citizens.
  • 1906 - November 20, First Constitutional (statehood0 convention met, pursuant to an EnablingAct passed by Congress. Convention finishes labors and adjourns July 16, 1907. Election follows, Constitution adopted, state, county and municipal officers elected, county boundaries fixed, counties named, or approved, also covering and including the area of the Five Civilized Tribes, meaning old Indian Territory, both territories being joined into one State under the name of the State of Oklahoma.
  • 1907 - November 16, Proclamation signed by President Theodore Roosevelt admitting Oklahoma into the Union as the forty-sixth state, under the Joint or Double Statehood Bill providing for the admission of Oklahoma and Indian Territory as one state.
