Walking With Sadie

Woof! Woof! NW Okie found this strange article in the 24 August 1915, Tuesday, The Guthrie Daily Leader, front page with the headlines: "Takes In Stranger As Her Husband." It concerns an Englishwoman being fooled by remarrying smooth imposter near London, in Manchester, England.

London, Aug. 1915 -- A remarkable case was heard in Manchester court, hen a man was arraigned on the charge of falsely representing himself as Sergeant Herbert Dandy of the Manchester regiment.

The testimony bought out that the real sergeant had been reported missing at the Dardanelles on July 15 and that his wife had been so informed. Eleven days later the alleged imposter appeared at Mrs. Dandy's house, wearing khaki. When she asked who he was he replied, "It is Herbert." They embraced, and he stayed at the house a week.

The neighbors began to express doubt as to the man's identity until the wife grew suspicious. Finally five comrades of Dandy saw him, but he failed to identify any of them correctly. Then he was arrested, but Mrs. Dandy's relatives were still uncertain.

The court held him for further examination.

Good Night! Good Luck! Woof! Woof!
