Walking With Sadie

Last week we had our cloudy, chilly days and our partly cloudy days, and the weekend shaped up into a slight warming trend with temperatures in the high 40's and low 50's in the southwest corner of Colorado, LaPlata county.

NW Okie has taken some more zoom-in shots of Irvin Mountain and the other mountains in the San Juan National forest, at Vallecito Reservoir. The digital image on the right is a of Mt. Irvin (or some might refer to it as "Guardian Mountain," which sets to the North of Vallecito Reservoir, at the north end, as a guardian of sorts for the valley below.

As you can see there is not much snowpack on the mountain peaks yet. Most of our snow comes in January through February, into March. But with the El Nino this year, we may not get our normal range of snowfall. Is it Global Warming (NRDC website), affecting our climate in the Rockies and other areas?

Some of us have learned that extreme climate change can/is changing our economy, health and communities in diverse ways. The Earth is trying to tell us something with the climate change, extreme record heat, drought, storms and fire. Some of us are learning, while others are in denial and refuse to accept the facts at hand.

Carbon pollution is reported to be the main reason our planet is getting hotter, increasing the chances of weather disasters, drought and flood and hurting our health, as well.

What are the solutions?

For starters, we can cut carbon pollution by reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and increasing our use of clean, renewable energy. We can also implement policies that help us prepare for flooding, drought, storms and the consequences of climate change.

As they say, "First, we need national leadership that will stop ignoring what the earth and scientists are telling us about climate change."
