One Hundred Years Ago 23 March 1914

It was also one hundred years ago in The Daily Ardmoreite, dated Monday, 23 March 1914, that there was talk of a "Big Refinery Is Probable," with building depending upon quality of oil in Healdton fields.

It all depended on the quality of the oil in the Healdton field, and if it was a good refining oil. The production would be cared for by the building of refineries. One refinery company had already been organized and that company had probably already tested the oil to its satisfaction before a charter was was taken out. Word had also been received to the effect that a large refinery would be built in Ardmore by Chicago capitalists.

Commissioner George A Henshaw had information on this subject and in response to a message sent him by The Ardmoreite, he wrote a letter to the paper, in which he states what he expects of the refiners and what the intentions of the commissioners are, provided the production of the field is not reasonably cared for.

Gentlemen:
Replying to your telegram a few days ago, which was received during my absence, beg to state that my information is to the effect that there will be a refinery established at Ardmore which will distill the latter oils and that the probable amount equal to the present production will be used for fuel. In addition to the fuel for railroads, all nearby industries, such as mills, gins, compresses, can use fuel oil cheaper than coal, where the freight rate will not exceed 25 cents per barrel.

We have great hopes that the production of oil will be reasonably cared for at the Healdton field within the next sixty days without any further proceedings before the commission. If it is not, some decisive action will be taken by the commission, and every law on our stature books on the anti-trust subject will be put to the test. Thus far, no proposition has even gotten too big, or too little for this commission to undertake.
