Early History of Avard Available

The following was sent to us by Sandie Olson, with the Waynoka Historical Society, in Waynoka, Oklahoma.

Several decades ago, Glenn E. Duck (1893-1978) wrote a history of Avard, Oklahoma. Most of the history was written in the 1960's. One page is a hand-drawn map showing the occupants of area farms. Later, Mr. Duck added several follow-up pages to the manuscript.

Mr. Duck explained his reason for writing the history: "The real pioneers are nearly gone. Their Word-of-Mouth stories of a fascinating period in history are in danger of being lost forever. Therefore, I will try to write a brief history of the pioneers of Avard, Woods County, and vicinity, formerly M County, Todd Post Office, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, also known as the Cherokee Strip."

The typed document has been reprinted as it was received, with the author's hand-written notes included. It is spiral bound with a protective cover, title page, and a plat map of Avard as shown in the 1906 Woods County Atlas.

Permission was given to the Waynoka Historical Society to reprint the document, and make it available exclusively through the Society's Museum Gift Shop at the Waynoka Harvey House.

The history may be purchased at the Museum Gift Shop for $6.50 plus $.58 tax. For mail orders, add $2.50.
