In Memory of Duchess Rose (2003-2013)

This little memorial is for my beloved friend and companion, Duchess Rose (a.k.a. Duchess of Weaselskin, Duch, and my Valentine Pug of 2003). Duchess was born 14 February 2003 and passed away 27 November 2013. Duchess is upon the mountain top with her dog friend Daisy (the Schnauzer) watching over her Southwest Rocky Mountain retreat where her humans and friends reside.

It is never easy loosing such a devoted Pug. You always had a friend in Duchess. She gave unconditional love, bringing a smile to your face and lifting you up when you needed it the most.

I will miss Duchess getting in my face at 7am in morning for a few friendly scratches behind the ears and a rub on the belly. That was her way of telling me that it was time to get up and get her some food. Duchess had become a real buddy to my husband, David, and tagged around after him, finally resting next to him on the couch. When I would lie in bed to rest, both Duchess and Sadie would be snuggled up next to me as close as they could possible get without being right on top of me. Duchess on one side and Sadie on the other. Kind of like a NW Okie & Pug sandwich. It was the warmest of feelings I will never forget.

I know my Duchess pug is upon the mountain top with Daisy, the Schnauzer, chasing the chipmunks and squirrels. Duchess loved everyone. She had a cute way of barking, but not really barking at all, but her sweet howling like a pug wolf and sometimes like a cat, when she talked to you. Duchess was my "Go-Dog." She would lay out by the pickup in the sun ready to go anywhere. She made me smile when I didn't feel like smiling at all. She was the best dog in the world and the best buddy. I liked the way she tried to make me jealous by picking out David to lay next to, as she looked over my way. I will miss her, but I will remember what a GOOD DOG she was for the last (almost eleven years 2/14/2003 - 11/27/2013). She will be missed but not forgotten! She will always have a big place in my heart always. I love you, Duchess, may you be chasing chipmunks, squirrels, and other Colorado wildlife where ever you are now.

Duchess was a "Duchess." If there was a snow on the ground, a water puddle to walk thru, or rain or snow falling from the sky . . . You needed to get an umbrella and lay a coat or clean her a path to walk. She was funny like that. She was the best of dogs. She knew every word I spoke to her, and would tilt her head to one side in such a way to let you know she knew everything you were saying to her. Her favorite word was anything that sounded like "EAT!" When you mentioned the word "Go," she would race you towards the pickup.

She would race me to the food bowl and do her circling routine and tell me to "Hurry up with the food." She was funny like that. Duchess grew up with my sons miniature schnauzer (Ruff) and was always trying to start some play time with him. Duchess in her little play mode, twitching her tight curled tail and talking dog to Ruff. They were cute together.

When Duchess would wrinkle her pug brow, you could see the diamond shape on her forehead. And when she tilted her head and looked at you with those wide eyes, you could not help but let a smile stretch across your face. She was a special buddy, companion and friend. Duchess would accompany me when I would go out to Clark's Horse ranch in Northwest Oklahoma to help with their horses.

I have a photo of her leaning against the open driver windows on my pickup with her left paw on the door and looking out at the horses. Duchess was the boss of the herd. Anyway, I let her be the boss even though I was the real top-dog.

Thanks for the memories, companionship and unconditional love< Duchess Rose.
