Dec., 1941 - Hero Injured In Air Raid

A Oklahoma hero was injured in the air raid at Hawaii, 7 December 1941, and was cited for his brave work.

Honolulu, Dec. 16 (1941) -- The story of how Lieutenant Taylor, Oklahoma boy cited for heroic flying against Japanese air raiders at Honolulu, was wounded in the army was told by one of his flying mates. Taylor, a native of Hominy, Oklahoma, bagged two planes before, being forced down with an arm wound. Lieutenant George Welch, Wilmington, Delaware said:

"All hell broke loose, and before we knew it, the air was full of Japanese planes," Welch said.

"I picked the nearest and went after it. I got a good bead and the next thing I knew, down he went.

"I looked for another enemy plane and discovered I was nearly out of ammunition, so I went back to the field. About that time Lieutenant Taylor came up. He shot down a bomber too and was low on ammunition. We loaded up all the rounds we could carry and took off again. Taylor bagged one more but got shot through the arm and had to come down."
