NW Okie's Corner

We are still watching the raccoons here in the southwest Rockies of Colorado, North of Bayfield, with our IP Dlink 5222L survielance camera, as the raccoons raid the leftover bird seeds dropped during the day by the birds that have been gathering. It is becoming an interesting study, to say the least.

We tried the air-filled balloon smeared with peanut butter, that my god-son in Houston, Texas suggested. We tied those balloons to the top of the stump that the raccoons use to launch to the hanging bird feeder nearby. There was not much hesitation with the air-filled balloons. The raccoon grabbed at it and "POP Goes the first balloon. The second balloon came about 4 hours later when the raccoon came back and grabbed the balloon by both hands (claws), and continued eating the leftover seeds on the ground. He even came back to the popped balloon and looked to licking the it at one point.

The second night we did a different version of the peanut butter smeared balloon by filling two balloons with water and tying them to the side of the stump. Those Cagey raccoons did not even try to touch the water-filled balloons, keeping about a three foot distance between them and the balloons.

The Third night we put the water-filled balloons out again, but there were not sightings of raccoons. Did they find another Diner without popping balloons? Were they just sleeping in late? I have no clue!
