1913 - Rumor Sen. T. P. Gore Contemplates Resigning, Startles Oklahoma

The following headline was the other front page headline found in the Tulsa World, 8 April 1913, morning edition, which read: "Rumor That Gore Contemplates Resigning Startles Oklahoma." It stemmed for charges filed against the blind senator. They were also asking if the ex-governor, Charles Haskell would accept the vacancy that would be left by Senator Charles Gore.

Speaker Maxey and H. H. Smith were also possibilities. There was no conformation of Resignation. The rumors that Senator T. P. Gore of Lawton may resign and that Former Governor C. N. Haskell had been urged to become a candidate for the place in case a vacancy should occur were flying thick and fast through the political atmosphere of the capital.

The charges that were said to have been filed against the Oklahoma senator in Washington, DC had given rise to the rumors of resignation. Friends of Senator Gore denied a report that was in circulation. That a member of the legislature received a telegram stating that the blind senator would resign.

The talks of the rumors had been circulating among the Oklahoma legislature for days. A petition was circulated among members which expressed confidence in the blind senator and asked the powers that be in WAshington, DC to pay no attention to any charges that might be brought to their attention declaring them to be false and inspired by those who would ruin Gore politically.

It turns out that though members went to talk to ex-governor Haskell, Haskell declared that he would not accept the place if offered him because he had his eye on the governorship in the next general election.

There was also a rumor that had connected the name of congressman Bill Murray with the senatorial race to succeed Gore. It was reported a few days later that Murray had decided to enter the race in the general election when Gore comes up again as a candidate to succeed the Lawton senator.
