Did you know or have you researched one hundred years for the following little tidbits of history? The 27th Comet discovered by Dr. William Brooks, and the white slave act that was up at the U.S. Supreme Court.

It was one hundred years ago, 21 October 1912, that a stray comet sighted by an eastern professor, Dr. William Brooks, director of Smith observatory and professor of astronomy at Hobart college, discovered a comet at 4 o'clock the morning of 21 october 1912 in the eastern sky. This was the 27th comet discovered by Professor Brooks. Its position was right ascension, 10 hours, 37 minutes, 20 seconds; declension south one degree, 87 minutes. The comet was in constellation Sextans, with moderate motion eastward and visible through small telescopes.

In that same newspaper, The San Francisco Call, 22 October 1912, there was this small article about "White Slave Act Is Up To U.S. Supreme Court." It goes on to say the supreme court advanced for early consideration cases involving the constitutionality of the white slave act, the conviction of Charles Hoike, former secretary of the American Sugar Refining company, charged with sugar customs frauds; the validity of the indictment of United Shoe Machinery officials, and the title to valuable oil lands claimed by transcontinental railroads under the land grant acts. All of these were set for hearing the 6th of January 1913.

Let me leave you with this last little tidbit of some of the "private opinions publicly expressed" from one hundred years ago concerning the presidential race in 1912. It was Bush Finnell, attorney, that said, "All good republicans should get behind Wilson and defeat Roosevelt. The Bull Mooser's election would be a national calamity."
