NW Okie's Corner

We received some MCGILL ancestry information this last week, but I am not sure where or even if this Capt. William F. McGill fits into our McGill ancestry. The photo on the left is a WWII photo of Capt. William F. McGill. Does he fit into your ancestry?

Vicki sent us this information that she stumbled upon while searching for some of her relatives, and was wondering if this was part of our McGill ancestry. The photo image on the left is of Capt. William F. McGill, who was killed in action 3 May 1945. I do not know of any connection to my McGill ancestry, but thank to Vicki for sending it along. Maybe there is someone out there that might be able to make a connection to their McGill's.

Capt. William F. McGill was assigned to aircraft P-51D CL-44-13743 "Skippy" with the 338th FS (list of fighter squadron pilots). On 17 February 1945, Capt. McGill was awarded 6th Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Medal. As the 338th FS prepared for an April mission, Capt. William McGill was taxiing when another P-51 accidentally collided with him, chopping the aircraft in two. Just two weeks later, on 3 May 1945, lightning struck twice as McGill was again hit from behind and killed by another P-51. He was the 55th Group's last wartime casualty. Ex-Mediterranean Theater of Operations pilot is buried in St. Marys Cemetery, Milford, New Haven County, Connecticut.

Cattle Trail West of Harper, KS

Rosalea with the Balmer Fund & Prairie Connection of Harper, Kansas sent us some information along with an inquiry concerning a cattle trail that may have run west of Harper and went on north to Ellenwood or maybe onto Abilene, Kansas. Did that trail connect to Oklahoma in some manner? Did it come from Texas and Oklahoma? Or from the Comanche Cattle Pool? We think it ran north and south and not east and west?

Also, did you know that it was the cowboys buying leather goods from the Patterson family (Ohio) in Harper, Kansas that made the money to erect what is now known as Rosalea's Hotel (Patterson Hotel) today?
