More Issues of Ft. Gibson Post Newspaper on-line...

"I transcribe old newspapers and am often on my band box about how wonderful old papers are. Off and on I hear from people who have found information in the transcriptions that they've been looking for for years. This time it was my turn. For over 30 years I've been trying to find proof of a family story - about a great uncle arrested for horse stealing that died in jail somewhere in Indian Territory. As I was typing along I found an article substantiating the story - color me happy! I've added issues of the Ft. Gibson Post newspaper (Ft. Gibson, Muskogee County, I.T.) from March 23, 1898 through June 16, 1898. The Post is as easy to transcribe as the Eufaula Indian Journal is difficult and these issues have been fun issues to read and transcribe. (Other than my personal great find) these issues include information about the beginning of the Spanish American War, the raising of troops in Indian Territory, a very embroidered account of Fort Gibson and why people should move there, the passing of the Curtis Bill (approving allotments of land to the Indians and the making of the final Indian Rolls), a great flood of the 3 Rivers area, a detailed account of the corruption of the new city officials in Muldrow, the incorporation of Ft. Gibson and a bumper crop of local gossip from Ft Gibson and the surrounding areas. And - the on-going suspense of whether the editor of the Post will starve and be forced to move on or whether the good citizens of Ft. Gibson will pay up what they owe and keep the paper. The new issues have been submitted to the search engine and should be indexed shortly. homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/newspapers/index.html." -- Linda - homepage: homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas - MarionCoAR: www.rootsweb.com/~armarion/ - TulsaCoOK: www.rootsweb.com/~oktulsa2
