NW Okie's Journey

Where did July 2015 scamper go? David and I celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary, 30 July 2015 (1969-2015). We have had our ups and downs, but nothing too serious that we could not work through. Thanks, David, for some great years, putting up with this independent NW Okie.

We did celebrate it a day before the "Blue Moon" this Summer of 2015. That image above is a zoomed in view of the Blue Moon taken around 11 o'clock PM, Houston, Texas time. It wasn't blue, though. I guess no smoke, dust particles were in the air, huh? Wondering if California's Blue Moon was blue - with all the forest fires, drought they have been experiencing. Was your Blue Moon blue, or just Full Moon?

Remember the first full moon rising on July 1st? This was the year's lowest full moon. At its highest at 1 o'clock AM, it did not even get one-third of the way up the sky, form typical North American locations. They say low moons look more orange, because of the thick air near the horizon. Others have even suggested that its amber color is the origin of the term, "Honey Moon."

The second full moon of July 31, 2015 qualifies as a Blue Moon. Did you know that some report that calling any month's second full moon a blue moon only started in the 1940's as a result of a mistake in an astronomy magazine?

The moon's period of phases is twenty-nine and a half days while months usually have 30 or 31 days. Does that make it obvious that if a full moon lands on the first day of any month except February it will repeat again at the end?

The "old Farmers Almanac" says the Blue Moon happens every 30 months on average. Two and a half years.

Good Night! Good Luck!
