Hugh McGill, Sr. (1749-1835)

Are there any MCGILL connections out there with the following information leading to Hugh MCGILL, Sr. (b. 1749 in Ireland-d. 13 Aug. 1835 in Cornwall, Orange, NY)?

We have not connected this MCGILL family lineage to NW Okie's MCGILLs, but I do know we have a Hugh MCGILL in our lineage. Is this leading to finding a needle in a haystack?

Hugh McGill, Sr. Family Story

This Hugh McGill was born in 1749 in Ireland. He married Esther Hallock in 1765. They had four children in 14 years. He died on 13 August 1835, in Cornwall, New York, having lived a long life of 86 years, and was buried in New Windsor, New York.

The McGill surname is Scottish (Galloway) and Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac an Ghoill 'son of the stranger' (see Gall 1). Sources for most the McGills were found in The McGills, Celts, Scots, Ulstermen and American Pioneers, by Capt. Augustus McGill, published by McGill-Warner Company, 1910, Saint Paul, page 332.

The 1800 United States Federal census showed Hugh McGill living in New Windsor, New York.

In 1821, we find the following: "Also we do annex to the school district No. 7 of said town Hugh McGill, Samuel Cleland, and the person occupying the farm of George Clinton deceased and William Cunningham family belonging to the school district No. 6 and the trustee of said district are to be governed accordingly." -- Source: New Windsor, New York Precinct records, 1763-1779, part two, page 128.

In 1830 U.S. Federal Census, Hugh McGill lived in New Windsor, New York.

This 1881 clipping, concerning William Lusk McGill, showed Hugh McGill immigrated from Ireland to New York. Lived in Little Britain, New York then Cornwall, married Esther Hillock. Their four children were John, Samuel, Hugh, and Margaret. -- Source: History of Orange County, New York.

William Lusk McGill -- His grandfather was Hugh McGill, who was born in the north of Ireland, where the family was in good circumstances. At the breaking out of the Irish rebellion, Hugh McGill, then a lad of seventeen years of age, participated in the revolutionary movements of the neighborhood, and narrowly escaped arrest by the English authorities. Getting on board of a vessel he came to New York, and subsequently engaged in farming at Little Britain, Orange county, NY. After a time he purchased a farm in Cornwall, where he passed the remainder of his days, dying about 1834. He married a Miss Hallock, and had three sons and a daughter. John and Samuel lived and died in Cornwall. Margaret, the daughter, married George Vanderheiden, of Troy, NY.

Hugh McGill, Jr. (1784-1833) Family

When Hugh McGill was born on 23 April 1784, in New Windsor, New York, his father, Hugh, was 35 and his mother, Esther, was 35. He married Margaret Lusk. They had three children (Samuel S.(1810-1902), William Lusk (1813-1852), James B (1818-1851)) during their marriage. He died on 21 August 1833, in his hometown, at the age of 49, and was buried there.
