(1892) Governor John P. Buchanan

I was doing a search through the old archives of Chronicling America, for McGill and found this little tidbit in The Salt Lake Herald, dated 25 August 1892, concerning Governor John P. Buchanan. It is as follows:

Governor John P. Buchanan, of Tennessee, was born near Franklin, in that state, October 24, 1847, and at the outbreak of the war went into the Confederate army. He served two terms in the Legislature and was nominated for governor through the influence of the Farmers' Alliance, which was then considering the advisability of running him as an Independent candidate against the regular nominee of the Democratic party. After his return from the war he married Miss Fannie McGill, daughter of a Tennessee pioneer.

McGill's position during the mining troubles in his state of Tennessee had been severely criticized, and the anxiety and worry brought about his serious illness.
