100 Years Ago, 8 January 1914

According to The Beaver Herald, dated Thursday, 8 January 1914, Beaver, Oklahoma, there was a front page article ("Stub Line A Sure Go!") concerning a survey of possible railroad stub line route to begin the coming Monday, which would connect with the W. F. & N. W. at or near Forgan, Oklahoma. They were promising that dirt would fly on new railroad before the close of he first month of 1914. Railroad was within their reach.

Stub Line A Sure Go -- The Southwestern Construction Company, which had been figuring with the Beaver Commercial Club for awhile on a proposition to construct a line of railroad connecting Beaver with the Wichita Falls & Northwestern Railroad (WF & NW) to the north had completed its organization and had commenced active work on the project. They were proposing to build a line of railroad from Beaver to an intersection of the WF & NW railway at or near Forgan, Oklahoma.

They were to commence work once on the survey. Arrangements were made to start the grade as soon as the survey was completed and the construction of the road would follow. It was the desire of the promoters to rush the work to completion so that it would be ready to handle the bumper sheet crop which Beaver county promised to produce next season.

Beaver had long been interested in this one line and the one which had always been within their reach, which they reached out their hand and grasped. It had ever necessary that the the people in general show a willingness to do their part toward securing this line which would not only be a great benefit to them but a paying proposition.

Everyone was pushing for co-operation to their mutual advantage and the result in the end would be a wonderful development, prosperity for Beaver and the entire country cough, southeast and southwest such as it had never known.Several thousand dollars worth of stock in the proposed stub line had been sold to residents of Beaver and to the farmers south of the river who had invested not only because they felt the road would be a benefit to them but because at the same time it appealed to them as a paying proposition, a good investment.

They were also saying, that in due time those interested the most in the promotion of the line, would doubtless call upon the public for assistance, support and would come among them either privately or in public meetings and set forth their pans and the terms upon which they hoped to build.

They were advising that when the time came to give the matter careful consideration, think of what such a road would mean to those in the area in the increase of the value of their lands, the bringing of a nearer and better market for their products and the growth and development of the entire county. Increasing their wealth and taxable property and reducing taxes and the high cost of living. They were encouraging people of the area to get their shoulder to the wheel and push for this WF & NW Stub line.   |  View or Add Comments (0 Comments)   |   Receive updates ( subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
