We continue our research into the 1873, June, Cherryvale, Labette county, Kansas murderous family of the "Bloody Benders." In the years after the June, 1873 discoveries of the murders, there were stories that the Bender family escaped to Europe. What is the true story of the "Bloody Benders?"

There were also stories of the Bender father, mother and brother being lynched along with Kate Bender. There were also stories of Kate Bender escaped from the Kansas town, went to Chicago, then made her way to the Atlantic seaboard and came to San Francisco in a sailing vessel around Cape Horn.

In The San Francisco Call, 5 May 1910, page 3, there was an article with headlines: "Death Adds To Bender Mystery." There was a Mrs. W. Peters, Dr. Endicott said that he knew nothing of any confession that Mrs. Peters might have made and nothing that would then in any way to connect her with the Bender family.

On July 24, 1901, a Kansas family traveling near Denver, professed to identify a Mrs. Frank Ayres of Fort Collins, Colorado, as Kate Bender. In August of 1901, Cornelius Stone, a resident of Linn county, Oregon, declared that he was one of a party of men who first discovered the crimes of the Benders and that he assisted in the lynching of the entire family, including Kate Bender.

The newspaper reported the woman who died in Rio Vista was about the age that Kate Bender would have been had she live.
