1893 - Perry (O.T.) Points

In The Wichita Daily Eagle, out of Wichita, Kansas, dated Friday, 3 November 1893, this front page article entitled, "The Outlet Towns" with a subheading of "Perry Points" mentioned that Perry was now a city of the first class, with a full set of officers. William Tighlman, formerly city marshal of Dodge City during the palmy days of that city, was appointed city marshal. There were nine patrolmen also appointed, and Perry now had a regular metropolitan police system.

Perry, O.T., Nov. 2 (1893) -- Other things we learned from the article were that Richard Nevins, brother of Mrs. James G. Blaine, Jr., and a former resident of Seattle, Washington, was appointed city engineer. C. W. Samuels of Kansas City was appointed street commissioner.

There was talk about "pocket franchise men" in Perry in large numbers. Not sure what these "pocket franchise men" were, though. But they were worrying the life out of the city fathers. The council had been in almost continuous session since the organization.

Howard Friend, a former Wichita citizen, and a member of the present council, has been honored by the chairmanship of several important committees.

It had been currently reported that as a result of the investigation by District Attorney Speed the official head of one of the prominent officials of the land office had been taken off, and that several more were expected to fall any day. It was reported that as a result several resignations had been sent in, and that more were to follow. This investigation was causing considerable excitement, and was the town talk. There had been over 100 different parties subpoenaed to appear and give evidence before the grand jury at Guthrie.

Judge W. P. Campbell of Wichita was in the city. Some say that the judge was looking for a location.   |  View or Add Comments (0 Comments)   |   Receive updates ( subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
