100 Years Ago Today - 26 November 1912

One hundred years ago today, 26 November 1912, Tuesday, The San Francisco Call, front page headlines read: "War Clouds Hang Low Over Nations of Europe;" "German kaiser Holds Peace of the Old World In His Keeping;" and "Austria Has Great Force Massed On Serb Border," Written by Paul Lambeth.

London, Nov. 25 (1912) -- The dogs of war were straining on the leash. Each of the great powers either was on a full war footing or was placing itself in the position as quickly as it could.

Six or seven million fighting men either were ready or were being placed in readiness to take the field when the order was given, if it would be given.

There were some signs that the tension was lessening, and it was possible that the forces which were making for peace may be able to prevent a clash which would compare to other wars as a mountain feud to the battle of Gettysburg.

There were few in responsible places, who were familiar wight eh situation, who were hopeful of peace. news came from Belgrade which at first glance made it appear that Servia was weakening.

It was to the effect that the little mountain kingdom would be willing to withdraw its demands for autonomy for Albania providing it were given an Adriatic port and free access to it.

The apparent concession was sea fruit so far as Austria was concerned. As it appeared, Austria does not care "tuppence" about a free Albania. Her efforts were to prevent Servia gaining access to the Adriatic. The free Albania cry merely was to secure the public opinion of the world to its side.   |  View or Add Comments (0 Comments)   |   Receive updates ( subscribers)  |   Unsubscribe
