1904 Broomcorn Men Organized In Alva O.T.

It was mid-September, 1904, that the first organization in the Oklahoma territory at Alva that the broomcorn men were organized. it was the first organization in the territory perfected at Alva -- keeping the price up.

This news article was found in The Oklahoman, dated September 28, 1904, page 2 with the following headlines: "Broomcorn Men Are Organized - First Organization in the Territory Perfected at Alva -- Will Keep Price Up."

Alva, Okla., Sept. 27, 1904 -- "The Oklahoma broom corn growers' association permanently organized last week. Its laws adopted and a board of direct elected, as follows: J. B. Mattox, W. C. Douglas, Scot Lewis, R. B. Daley, Geo. Peters, D. Hulett, J. M. Morris and A. Huff, J. Mattox was elected president and B. Daley vice president and W. Douglas, secretary and treasurer.

"Mr. Mattox is also president of the Farmers' Federation and secured a settlement of the federation case on the railroad company for discrimination whereby they have come to a cordial understand. The road agreeing furnish cars where needed, giving the best facilities and paying $500 damages for past delinquencies.

"The vice president R. B. Daley, Woodward, Okla., was appointed superintendent of organization. A notice of the incorporation of the organization and its purpose was published as news in some of the Oklahoma City papers and had the effect to bring over 200 letters to the temporary president, from broom corn raisers, dealers and railroad officials. The Santa Fe officer visited him and arranged to build a loading platform 16x100 feet at Alva, and agreed to ship the corn with out advanced freight and to give stoppage and transit privileges for storage at warehouses."
