My great-grandfather was inducted into the 25th regiment early in 1861. He fought in the Battle of Rich Mountain and, I think, he was taken prisoner. Early in the war, prisoners were exchanged between the sides. I think the prisoner had to swear an oath of allegiance to the Northern side. He was discharged on 19 Apr 1862.
