History of Woods County Oklahoma

I am not in favor of decreasing the amount of countys in Oklahoma. It would cost a lot of jobs. It would cost more to run the larger countys than it does to run the smaller ones. Most countys try to be self sufficient. People gripe now if they have to drive 40 miles to a county seat. We don't need 20,000 people in a county.

I think Oklahomans need to get a hold of their state congress persons and let them know what is on their minds. This merging of of counties is going to cost more than it would save. I think the 2000 census they were looking at showed Major, Alfalfa and Woods counties with any where from 6000 to 8000 population each. Woodward's population was something like 18,000 or more. Just think of the transportation costs of traveling throughout a merged county! Ridiculous! What kind of state congress persons do you the voters elected in Oklahoma?

I enjoyed reading the history of Woods County. Commissioner William Barker was my grandfather. Regarding the combining of counties so each would have 20,000 residents or more, it doesn't appeal to me, and probably doesn't appeal to counties who cover a sizable area. It is 26 miles to the county seat - Alva - and that is far enough. If smaller counties vote to combine their counties, that's different than forcing the issue. Woods County was split years ago into Alfalfa, Major and Woods. We would probably have to include a few more to reach 20,000.
