The swimming pool was on the land too, but they had it filled in last year during a lot of repairs after oil company had been there.

Elwood Monroe Mitchell worked at the Wolco Gas Plant - until Oct 1927 when he died on his shift at the plant. No compensation paid to the family for a death at work.

Wolco was originally a Wolverine Oil Company camp located in the Avant oil field in the 1910s. Originally just called Wolverine, the name was changed to Wolco in 1922 with the establishment of a post office. The town was located 5 miles east of current day Barnsdall (also named for an oil company). The town was built around the Wolverine gasoline plant and included a residential area, company building, a club house with swimming pool, school, and 10 private businesses. In the 1920s the population varied from three to four hundred people. In 1922, Wolverine was acquired by Shell. The refinery was shut down after WWII and by 1957, the post office was closed. Shell sold the property in 1965. All that remains of Wolco today are concrete foundations and the old drayage barn.

I/m surprised it took so long to post my comments, but I do appreciate it. I've been concentrating on an article about Wolco and wolf hunting (with hounds) in the 1920'-30's. I doubt that many of your readers are familiar with that information. Sincerely,

Carrie, I just looked up the photo of S/Sgt Marion Boren that I have and it looks like it came from a Kemper Military album that I have scanned. If you right click and save as, you can save the image to your hard drive.

Carrie, if you let me know the exact photo of S/Sgt Marion Boren, I will see about getting a copy of the original to you. Was it a snapshot or was it a scan of the Kemper or Kentucky Univ. photos that you came across. I do not have any more information on him, though. I saw a photo on your Uncle Bob's legacy page of some WWll airmen. One was S/Sgt Marion Boren Missing in action 6-14-1943. This is a relative of mine. Do you have any other info on him? Is there any way I could get a copy of that original photo. It is the only one we have found of him. I would really appreciate anything you could share with me. I did find out his plane wnet down in the English Channel and his body was never recoverd. He was flying in the B-17F "Visiting Fireman". he was part of a ten man crew on that plane. Thank you.

James (Jimmie or Jimmy) Berry Oakley, class of 1939 at Kemper was my neighbor in Wolco, Oklahoma. His younger brother William (Billy) was my classmate. His father and my father were Superintendents of the WOLCO (Wolverine) Oil co. which later became part of SHELL. I have written considerably about Wolco. Glad to see you are interested.
