Volume 7, Issue 25 - Feature #414

600 Block of Barnes Avenue - Alva, OK...

I don't know the name of the gracery store but I was about 3years old, like 1934 when I remember going to the store with my dad. Near the cash register, on the west side of the store was a barrel with pickled herring and you just bought them out of the barrel, so wonderful and that was a treat for dad and I. This store was about 3 or 4 doors to the East of where they later built the Denner bakery. I also remeber getting licorice from that same little store. These were the only two treats I can ever remeber having as a small child. When I was a bit older we went to Bynum's drive in restaraunt and had a hamburger and we had a baby sized beer which was free for little kids. This was on the west side of the square, on the corner across from Monfort's drug store. The only reason we got to go there was my cousin was working there. What a thrill that was!
