Maxine taught third grade, not first, and that was at Horace Mann. I still remember her stern grey eyes, both those on the front of her head and those on the back. First was taught there at that time by Miss Mattie Lydie. The tattered remnants of my once formidable memory tell me that Byron was called "Starbuck," but probably not by his wife. Sorry to hear about Don.
