CommentsVolume 7, Issue 15 - Feature #223Randy Murrow, NW Oklahoma... I remember a summer working with Randy and Frank Hickman for Merle, Kack and Jim Leslie there in Dacoma. Although I didn't know the girl, Randy and the two Leslie boys took great delight in kidding "Frankie" about her. This was usually around the dinner table at Merle's house or at Kack's house. Kack's wife, Betty, is my first cousin. Terry Smith - 2005-04-24 08:01:27 A request for readers... I'm trying to gather as much information about my brother as I possibly can and would deeply appreciate it if any of his friends from high school or college would care to write of some special memories of Randy. If you have any photos, I surely would like a copy of them (saved to JPG format would be great...or burned to a CD, the highest resolution possible). You can email me as follows: (no spaces) rod murrow @ ya hoo "dot" com. I hate to print it the "real" way, just to help keep SPAM down a little. I have found some treasures - "Blue Book" exams from several of Dr. Vahdat's classes, a freshman English term paper written for Mary Helen Wilson, the JFK Award, many photos and papers, NSC student ID, address book, old historic LIFE magazines and newspapers saved for many years, and a stack of letters that he'd written home while he was in Washington. My mother had saved many of his papers back into elementary school years as well, and it was all packed into that trunk. When I opened it, I had the sense that I was invading "sacred space" somehow. Thanks, everyone, for whatever stories or memories you may wish to share. Rod Murrow - 2005-04-16 22:29:01 Randy majored in English and Political Science and was pursuing Poli-Sci in his master's program. He worked as a night guard at the U.S. Capital while attending school at the American University in Washington - and when I visited him in August 1969, I got a tour of the capitol building that the average citizen never got to see! His aspiration was in politics and his goal was the White House. After JFK selected RFK as his Attorney General, we laughed and decided that when he became President that he should create a cabinet position for me as "Secretary of the Fine Arts" or some-such thing. I like to think that he would have been in the U.S. Senate by now and would be on his way to fulfilling his dream...(or perhaps already be retired from that position). Rod Murrow - 2005-04-16 22:18:02 Thanks Rod for that. I remember Randy well and his booming voice was always commanding. I don't believe I ever saw Randy without a smile. Floyd Thompson - 2005-04-16 16:06:25 Rod, very interesting read. I am curious about the other items that you may find of your brother's. Also, what was his major in college and his goals as far as what he wanted to do in life. The reason I ask, this piece was so well written it would be hard to believe he was not going to do something in the line of communications. Was just wondering. Larry Whitely - 2005-04-16 16:03:32 I remember Randy Murrow well. Although I graduated from Byron-Driftwood High School in 1966, we were in the Orient Conference along with Dacoma. I was a college classmate for three years at Northwestern State College (1966-1969). I was on Christmas leave and driving home to Byron, OK from U.S. Army Flight School at Fort Rucker, AL on 20 December 1969. I was a gas stop, when I called my parents to advise them of my progress. My Mom advised me to drive carefully and mentioned that Randy had been killed in an auto accident that same day. I remember the thoughts that passed through my mind of Randy's accomplishments and what a shame it was that his life had been cut short. I have been procrasinating on the subject of writing my life story for my descendents. The article on Randy has made me realize that I need to get started! Wayne S.
