WWI I - POW's Murals & Artwork...

The prisoner of war art was very fascinating. Again, it shows how important the arts are to our well-being, even in times of duress. If the writers wish, we could publish their articles and requests in the April Prairie Connection. We have a number of German ancestory readers who might be able to help find those they seek. I believe the murals found in the Waynoka business may be housed at the Waynoka Museum/Historical Society. The Cherokee Strip Museum in Alva (the old general hospital to some) has the German castle carving and others. Would love to see the photos Lois took of the murals found in the Waynoka area.

I got photographs of the German paintings in the buildings that were at Waynoka when they were either tearing them down or moving them in 1981. My Uncle Willie Rauch lived just across the way so he called me when the paintings were found. I ran over and snapped a few pictures. The last I heard of them after that was that Mr. Zwink at NWOSU had been contacted about them, I have not know what happened with them after that. I still have my photo's somewhere in a photo album. This was also the first I had ever known about the POW camp being at Alva. I have since watched documentaries about the camp here in Alva, it is said that the worst of the worst were rounded up and housed here.
