NW Oklahoma & Waynoka Lose Great Citizens...

I was greatly saddened to read about the Cohlmia's tragic accident. Frank's was always my favorite place to visit when I came to Waynoka regularly a number of years ago. It always smelled the way I remembered dry goods stores in my youth.... new leather boots, textiles, fashions from NYC, etc. And of course, Kamell was an "institution" in his own right! The Frey Bros. drugstore in Amorita is gone, Whittit's grocery and grill in Dacoma is gone, and now this. Our nonprofit organzation, The Balmer Fund, Inc., purchased the old Dairy Mart, an original Valentine Diner, from Cherokee via Nescatunga and it is sitting in Harper, KS. It needs repair, of course, so we are always looking for some benevolent soul who'd like to help restore it. Having lived my young life on a farm only 15 or 20 miles from the Oklahoma border, I have always felt a kindred spirit with the Oakies. Losing these wonderful places grieves me. At least I had the sense to take many people along to visit the past 13 years before they were gone.
