Oakie's NW Corner

Comment on marriages of 1944. I grew up in Alva. My family home is now the Methodist student center west of the NWOSU campus. I went to grade school at the teacher training school at NWOSU, then NW Teachers College. I graduated from Alva High with the Class of 1939 and NWOSU Class of 1943. Joined Navy, received commission Dec. '43, married Winona Maddox Jan. 10, 1944 while home on leave. Winona's friend Shirley Jean Wiley had married an air force member by the of Mulholland who was in a USAF class at NW. All my friends were in military or workin in war plants elsewhere so Shirley and her husband stood with us when we were married. We had never see Mr. Mullholland before and haven't seen him since. Alva Presbyterian minister Ted Knotter presided. He tied a pretty good knot; we celebrated our 69th wedding anniversary this year. Merrill Schnitzer
