Col. Bob Kirkbride

Re. the story (true) about Col. Bob K. and the runaway airplane. He no doubt saved some lives that and deserves credit.

I well remember Col. Bob, including his taffy pulls. In the early '30's he drove a big Buick. In winter snows he would attach a large sled (as wide as the car and about 8 feet long) behind the car and slowly drive the streets of Alva. Kids would run, jump on and drive a spell. According to rumor he finally quit when one youngster broke an arm getting on or off. Col. Bob, an auctioneer, m.c.'ed Yahoo Night (similar to Bingo)at the Rialto theater on Wed. nights. A large dial was projected on the screen; the pointer would spin, stopping on a number. When a person's card was filled, they would yell "Yahoo" and wouuld win a sizeable (for those days) monetary prize. Needless to say, the theater was full every Wed. evening. Without a doubt, he was the best known person in the county.

Re Col Bob Kirkbride! He was my grandmother's older brother! that makes me his grand nephew I guess! His sister Mercy (my grandmother) married Dan Mahaney and had 5 daughters, with my mother Mary (Babe) being the youngest. Mary wed Harry Donlan, also from Lincoln Nebraska in California and had 3 sons, Daniel, Michael and Patrick. Danial lives in Los Angeles, Michael in Sante Fe, New Mexico, and Patrick in Wiltshire in the UK

Re: Col. Kirkbride When I was about 4 years old, we lived in the Kirkbride Apartments. My clearest memory of that time is the taffy pull that he hosted in the back yard of the apartment building. The children were given lollipops made of bright red unpulled taffy. Too bad there's not much of the same kind of camaraderie today between landlord and tenant!
