Volume 8, Issue 41 - Feature #2149

Boxcar Bill

Wow! I was really floored to see this feature. My dad, Jake Weigand, my mom and I would often visit my Uncle Harvey and Aunt Ruth at their farm. Most times I would cross the road and spend some time with "Uncle Bill", motivated to some degree by the excellent Welch's grape juice he served. If not mistaken I believe my Uncle Phillip A. Weigand was married to Matilda Schwab. Regardless of the kinship, Uncle Bill was a good conversationalist, and I have fond memories of our visits.

To Whoever took the time/effort in remembering this man: Many Thanks.

My husband Chris and I also remember "Boxcar Bill" or "Schwabby" as some called him. Edwin and Lola Geis (neighbors to the west) also cared for Bill, giving him staples in small containers. Lola often filled a jar of sugar or flour for his use. On Sunday mornings on our way to church in Alva we would notice Bill's overalls still hanging on the fence to dry after their Saturday's washing. Bonnie
