Orion Stories & photos...

The outhouses and benches north of the Orion cemetary are there because there used to be a program held there each "decoration day" with local talent performing. I was raised 1 mile south of the cemetary and the cemetary was a gathering place every year on that day.

Sheri - I have almmost the same picture of those steps. My husband and I visited the Orion Cemetery in 2003 and wondered what the mysterious steps were for. Was there a building on top of the cement slap that is still there and if so what purpose did it serve? My husbands grandparents are buried there along with other members of his family. We've walked the cemetery 3 or 4 times and love the serenity of it.

It's been some years years ago at the Orion Cemetery we poured the concrete slab and steps on the north side of the road and built the out houses for the use of people who came on Memorial Day. People used to come on this day and visit all day long. It was the only time they saw some of these people. We are in the process of putting up a shelter on the cement slab for funerals when the weather is bad. With the shelter up maybe people will start visiting again.
