A. C. Grimes Testimony for Defense

Mr. Grimes testified about Mabel Oakes face a few days before the general election. He went to see Miller and he wasn't in at the time and Miss Oakes said he would be back in a few minutes and He set down near the front door. Miss Oakes set at the typewriter table with the left side of her face toward Mr. Grimes.

Mr. Green came along and talked to Mr. Grimes while he was there. Grimes noticed that Miss Oakes was black along the left side of her face and it ran back to about her ear. She also had a black eye on the left side of her face. This was just before the election, maybe a day, two or three days, something like that.

Mr. Grimes testified that Miss Oakes did have a scarf around her neck. Mr. Grimes did noticed the unusual way or manner in which Miss Oakes wore the scarf. Her neck was rather long and she wore that scarf very tight and her neck bulged out and Grimes wondered how she could live that way. Miss Oakes replied to Grimes that she had throat trouble and wore...

Mr. Pruiett objected and Mr. Wilson asked another question of Grimes to show the jury and use the scarf and show about how she wore that scarf the day he saw her. Mr. Grimes replied, "I just couldn't fix that scarf the way she had it, it was up very smooth around her... It was so tight that it called his attention to it.
