Old Opera House Mystery

An Awful Tragedy - news article

Mabel Oakes Found Dead

This little article was on the frontpage of the Nov. 10, 1910, Alva Review Courier, Alva, Woods County, Oklahoma.

(From Wednesday's Daily) -- The city was greatly shocked this afternoon to hear that Mabel Oakes had been found dead in an anteroom of the old Opera House. She was formerly an employee of N. L. Miller, but had not worked for him for some time, though she had been there once in awhile. Mr. Miller left her in the office when he went to dinner and returning a few hours later found her dead as described. He immediately notified the officers who took charge at once. Miller was held pending the doctor's examination. This is one of the worst tragedies that has happened in the history of our city. Will try to give further particulars tomorrow.
