NW Okie's Journey

As we continue our look back at the Oklahoma Territory outlaws of the 19th century, we discover the fact that many of the desperadoes, murderers and outlaws who infested the Indian Territory had at one time or another been in the employ of the United States government, sometimes by direct appointment from Washington, often by commission from resident government officials.

Why and what caused this to happen in the western heartland? Do we learn our lessons from the past and continue to appoint criminal elements in Kansas and Oklahoma?

Woof! Woof! Looking back to 1892 and appointments of U. S. Marshals before and during that time, we wonder sometimes what drove so many so called respectable families of that era to the criminal side. Especially in Kansas and Oklahoma Territory.

Strip Opening Chance Looks Dubious (December 1892)

There was an interesting news article dated Saturday, 24 December 1892, in "The Evening Kansan," in Newton, Kansas, concerning "The Strip Opening." Its chance of success was reported as looking very dubious. Chairman Peel had little hope. And the head of the Indian affairs committee blamed objector Holman for the delay. One more supreme effort was to be made to pass the measure during the session of congress.

Bill Dalton, A Deputy Marshal (1892)

Here is an interesting news article dated Saturday, 24 December 1892, in "The Evening Kansan," in Newton, Kansas, concerning Bill Dalton, brother of the Dead outlaws at Coffeyville, Kansas. Bill Dalton was a Deputy Marshal in Uncle Sam's Service.

1892, Spearville Kansas Bank Robbed

It was Wednesday morning, 2 November 1892, that we read in "The Wichita Daily Eagle, out of Wichita, Kansas, about the "Spearville Bank Robbed By Masked Bandits." The cashier was covered with revolvers and compelled to shell out the cash on hand. The thieves followed by a posse, but managed to escape with their booty after a running fight.
